AKISIEC Gets Kudos
The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr. Chris Nyong has commended the foresight of Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) in creating and delineating new wards in response to the legitimate yearnings and aspirations of the people for more representation at the grassroots level.
Stating this during a working visit by the Chairman and members of AKISIEC in Uyo, Dr. Nyong said the tour was well timed coming at the time when Nigerians as a nation was taking stock of electoral systems with a view to reforming it to serve us better.
He thanked AKISIEC for the successful conduct of the last poll in the state saying that its transparent conduct of the 2008 council polls in Akwa Ibom State enshrined its name in gold and urged AKISIEC to employ new and improved strategies to consolidate on the gains of the last exercise in future elections.
Dr. Nyong used the opportunity to appeal for more wards and units given the cosmopolitan nature of Uyo and the population growth of its people.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of AKISIEC, Mrs. Gloria Ukpong thanked the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council for his benevolence and warm reception stating that there was need for Uyo Local Government Council to provide a land for a state office which will be built by the state government and enjoined women to seek elective offices and be active participants in the next election.
Mrs. Ukpong advised that people should contribute to the choice of their elected candidates and stressed the need to choose credible and acceptable candidates who will contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the area. The AKISIEC boss warned against the use of thugs during elections but encouraged people to exercise their franchise during the next elections.
The AKISIEC Chairman assured that she will not hesitate to sack any official who is involved in corrupt practices and therefore advised people seeking political offices not to entice her officials with gifts but to conduct themselves properly.
Contributing, the leader of Uyo legislative council Hon. Anietie Eka thanked the Chairman of AKISIEC for her visit and pledged the council’s unalloyed support to AKISIEC.
