AKSG To Construct More Roads In Ikot Abasi
Akwa Ibom Government has reiterated its commitment to commence the construction of some road in Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency in the state soon.
Governor Godswill Akpabio who announced this at a rally organized for him by Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency mentioned Essene Road and Atan River Bridge. Already, the government has constructed and completed 19 roads in Ikot Abasi Urban.
Chief Akpabio stated that “you have made request for roads in Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin and Estern Obolo, but I will not construct these roads for politics. I will not bring stones and come back to pack them after the election. when I announced am doing your roads, that is done. I want to assure you that we will start construction of these roads before January 2011”.
The Governor hinted that Amalaka-Atabrikang-Okorote Road abandoned by Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) would be referred to its managements, adding “On the two roads that are handled by NDDC, I will take it up with the management for construction”.
Chief Akpabio who described Ikot Abasi as the major economic hub in the state, explained that the area deserved more infrastructures to compensate for its contribution to economic growth of the nation and the state and cited Ibom Power Plant, AC-RUSAL and Akwa Ibom State University, among others.
The Governor assured them that the position of the state Deputy Governor would still remain in the Federal Constituency, saying “Ikot Abasi is lucky, you wanted me to come and pick the No. 2 citizen from you. You want me to announce that the No. 2 position should remain here, I say a bam’
Governor Akpabio who was conferred with “Ntrurukpom” Chieftaincy title by the Traditional Rulers Council in the Federal Constituency expressed happiness to the Federal Government for siting a Naval Base in Ikot Abasi and for posting more than 150 officers to resume duty here.
He thanked the people for organizing the rally for him and for the accolades poured on his efforts in completing some inherited projects in the state, positing that “I’m excited that Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency remains the safest ground for our 2011 campaign. It’s not easy for a government to continue a project that was inherited by another government.
My administration has done this because we believe in continuity. The government is not looking for glory but for legacy that will enhance the living standards of Akwa Ibom people. I was not interested in getting glory because it belongs to God but I was interested in completing the projects that will change the living standards of the people”.
The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Akpan Etukudo thanked the governor for appointing some indigenes of the area into top positions in government and execution of basic infrastructural facilities such as the power plant and the university.
Mr. Etukudo, a one-time Minister of State for Finance in the Federation who endorsed the Governor for a second term in office however, called for the construction of more roads in the area.
