Governor Bags Another LL.D
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has concluded arrangements to confer an honorary degree of Doctorate of Law (LL.D) on Akwa Ibom Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio.
This would bring to four the honorary degrees so far bagged by the Governor having been awarded same by the University of Uyo, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, University of Calabar, his alma mater.
Governor Akpabio who dropped the hint recently when the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, Dr. Roland Ehigiamosu and Governing Council members of University of Calabar, Calabar (UNICAL) paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Uyo said the event earlier scheduled for June 12 has been shifted to August this year due to his inability to attend the ceremony on the earlier date.
Chief Akpabio thanked UNICAL for the award, and described the convocation as a fantastic one particularly as Akwa Ibom people turned out in large number to witness it.
He lauded the university for its stringent policy resulting in a high academic standard and recalled how the university asked him with his Higher School Certificate and doing year two to go back to year one, noting “The academic standard in UNICAL is different from other universities. Your standard is quite high. Everybody knows that”.
The Governor thanked God after what the university did, the parent university – University of Nigeria has found it necessary to give him an award.
Akpabio who called on the university to keep the standard going, preach against cultism and inculcate in children reading culture remarked “please keep the high standard going as much as possible, preach against cultism which is menace now and encourage our children about reading culture”.
The university Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, Dr. Ehigiamosu appreciated the Executive Governor for showing love and concern to his alma mater, noting “Of course, that is why we decided to honour him. It was a well-deserved honour. He could reject it, but he accepted the honour”.
Dr. Ehigiamosu who was accompanied by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bassey Asuquo and the Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Julia Omang, among others hinted “Today, we have come here to present the certificate of the award given you and present our token traditional gift”.
