Govt To Resettle Traders Soon
Akwa Ibom Government has set up a committee and assigned it the task of recommending payment of compensation to, and building more market stalls for the displaced traders of Uyo Main Market.
It would be recalled that the market was closed down on February 28, last year on the order of the government following the murder of one Moses George, a staff of Ministry of Environment in the market by some irate traders.
Headed by the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Anietie Etuk, the committee consists of other government functionaries and of traders in the market namely, Ernest Ita John, Zion Ndarake Akpan, Moses Sambo, Deaconess Comfort Sampson and Glory Dickson.
Akwa Ibom Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio who supervised the election of members into the committee at a well-attended meeting by the traders at Government House, Uyo gave the committee two weeks to turn in their report for speedy implementation.
Chief Akpabio who regretted the inconveniences facing most traders in the market blamed others for providing a hide-out for criminals in the market to wreck havocs on innocent people, a situation, he said, led to attack, death of the person and subsequent closure of the market by government.
He called for co-operation from them and promised to implement the decisions of the committee without delay to alleviate sufferings and hardships of the traders.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Renewal, Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem had told the Governor that his committee inaugurated on February 17, last year constructed roads, market stalls, ware houses, provided electricity and water in Akpan Andem Market for re-allotment to the displaced traders from Uyo Main Market.
