State Government Frowns At Land Encroachment

The State Government has expressed dismay over the extent of encroachment on the University of Uyo main Campus land along Nwaniba by individuals and the community bordering the institution.
This indication was given recently by the Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, Dr. Bassey Antai while inspecting sites of the University of Uyo main campus and that of College of Health Science at Use Ikot Obio Offot, Uyo.
Commissioner Antai who was accompanied by his Directors and members of the University Community Relations Committee, decried the situation where illegal structures are raised on the University land and the destruction of economic trees by Tipper Drivers who ply through the campus to dredge from the river.
At the site of College Health Science, he expressed shock and disappointment at the extent Julius Berger Company has excavated the land, adding that the company and the ten village heads where the University main campus is sited would be summoned to the Ministry of Lands for explanation.
Dr. Antai also advised the University Community to ensure that the Land is protected against encroachment by fencing.
Also speaking the Deputy Director Physical Planning, Arch. Inyang Obong explained that the Land belonging to College of Health Science has been seriously damaged by the Community and Julius Berger.
He also added that the river where people are dredging from is conservation area for research as shown on the Master Plan.
