University Don Tasks Parents
Parents have been encouraged to buy Christian literatures for their children in order to build their sense of success and confidence in reading as a first step to positive attitude towards reading.
This indication was given by Chief Librarian of the University of Uyo, Prof. Felicia Etim recently during the book launch and public presentation of the book, “The Essence of Womanhood: Fulfilling your Destiny in God” held at NUJ Press Centre, Information Drive off IBB Avenue, Uyo. According to her, parents should also develop a positive attitude to reading in order to develop an effective thinking process.
Prof. Etim explained that reading and thinking are inter-related, while reading is to alert, thinking is to understand, evaluate the information and reasoning of the text.
She said that through reading and thinking, the individual becomes socially orientated, self controlled, able to comply with external standard, gain self esteem, empathy and have moral reasoning.
Addressing the occasion, the Commissioner for Information and Social Re-orientation, Mr. Aniekan Umanah commended the author of the book Mrs. Blessing Ufot Urua describing her effort as an intellectual exercise worthy of emulation by other women.
The Commissioner who was represented by the Director, Technical Services, Mr. Inyang Jameson observed that the success of Mrs. Urua underscored the efforts of the promise-keeping Governor in creating the enabling environment for such exercise to thrive.
The Information Boss noted that this is evidenced in the free and compulsory education from primary to secondary school level, rehabilitation of schools, accreditation of courses in tertiary institution and construction of an ultra modern E-Library to boost education.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Nseabasi Akpan who was represented on the occasion by the Director, Educational Services, Dr. Esop E. Inyang said the book will be adopted into the school system and promised to purchase some copies of the book for distribution to all public libraries in the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Political and Legislative Affairs, Elder Nnamnso Umoren said that the author, Mrs. Urua, was one of the reliable journalists in the Ministry of Information he used to work with in the production of special magazines for the state government.
Elder Nnamnso advised the author not to give up in the task of writing and publishing as more books will keep on informing and educating the people of the state.
Reviewing the book, Dr. Nnyanga Akpan of the University of Uyo described the palm tree at the front cover of the book as the symbol of fruitfulness and resilience of womanhood.
Earlier in her address, the author, Mrs. Blessing Urua said that the Essence of Womanhood: Fulfilling Your Destiny In God illuminates the purpose of God for creating the woman, adding she is an instrument or vessel of God’s salvation to the world
The occasion attracted eminent personalities from all works of life including Rev. Sylvanus Ukafia who also exhort at the event; family members of the author, Journalists and staff of Ministry of Information and Social Re-orientation among others.
